We are now officially done with Week 1 of the college football season. For the most part, the teams that were expected to win, won, and there were few surprises...but, that doesn't mean we didn't learn much...
- Florida (played on August 24) might not be deserving of their #8 ranking. While they did pick up the win over the Miami Hurricanes, they did everything they could to lose that game in the 4th...their only saving grace was Miami being even better at doing everything they could to lose...Florida is very lucky to be 1-0 instead of 0-1. - Clemson and Alabama: As good as advertised. I didn't see anything to make me think we won't be getting Clemson/Alabama again in the CFP Finals. - Ohio State gave up 21 to Florida Atlantic, a team that has had one winning record since 2008. And what happened in the 2nd half to the Buckeyes offense? Ohio State cruised to 28 points in the 1st quarter, and then only managed to score 17 for the rest of the game. This game should have been a massacre similar to what Penn State did to Idaho, but the Buckeyes just couldn't keep the pressure on. - Michigan needs to get better at turnover management. Michigan won the game 40-21, but it never should have been that close. First, QB Shea Patterson fumbled the ball on Michigan's very first play from scrimmage, and it led to MTSU's first TD. Next, Michigan CB Lavert Hill muffed a punt that Middle Tennessee State recovered and turned into their second TD. Then, to make things worse, Hill dropped a WIDE OPEN interception that was a guaranteed pick-6. When I say wide open, I mean, there wasn't anyone anywhere near him. He catches it, he has nobody between him and the endzone. Two turnovers and the failure to create one of their own represented a 21 point swing. The scoreboard doesn't it show it, but Michigan played better than their 19 point win would suggest. They very easily could have won this game 47-7 but for a few stupid mistakes. - Maryland scored 79? In one game? WTF? That could match their points total for all of their combined B1G games coming this season... - Auburn probably silenced some of their critics with a clutch win over #11 Oregon and 1st round NFL prospect QB Justin Herbert. - Iowa State, a Big XII team, needed 3OTs to beat Northern Iowa, an FCS team. Not a great look, Cyclones. - Oklahoma convinced former Alabama QB Jalen Hurts to transfer to Sooner Nation, and well...it was a good idea for both parties. Hurts went 20/23, 332 yards, 3 TDs. Not a bad debut at all, lol. - Nebraska still has a long way to go in order to prove they merit any talk about them winning the B1G West. They looked mediocre at best taking care of South Alabama. Those are my thoughts, what stood out to you the most this week in college football? Want to add something? Disagree with something I wrote? Leave it in the comments! - Dave
