Heisman Hype: I still don’t really care at this point in the year. For the next month we’ll get random “dark horse” candidates who have chewed up shitty competition and people are writing about them.
Top 4: No Change 1. Alabama: Two big games back to back against Ole Miss and then A&M. 2. Georgia: If the offense is actually on track, then this team can beat Alabama. 3. Oklahoma: They need to fix their offense quick. 4. Oregon: Doing what they needed to do by destroying a bad Arizona team. Down:
If you haven't had a chance to watch this yet, this video serves as a prime example of why fans simply don't have any faith in referees. As we all are familiar, in college football, on a punt, as soon as the punting team touches the ball, it's blown dead, and that's where the offense starts their next possession. UNLESS you happen to be one of the referees in this game, that is...Because you could MAYBE MAYBE try to argue that the first Mississippi State player (#5) didn't actually touch the ball, so technically, the ball was still live...but, you cannot, under any circumstances whatsoever, make the claim that the 2nd Mississippi State player (#1) didn't. He very clearly makes contact, as he actually forces the ball to change direction. That's it. That should have been the end of the play, right there. It's either Memphis' ball at the 1 yard line, or it's Memphis ball at the 8. No other outcome should have been possible. And yet? What happens? The refs just sit there picking their butts, while a Memphis player scoops up the ball, DESPITE the fact the play should have been blown dead, and returns it for the TD. No way that stands, right? Ball was clearly dead! Except...the refs totally allowed it to stand. Memphis got a free TD out of play that should have resulted in them having 1st down at either their own 1 or 8 yard line. Absolutely ridiculous, and one of the all time worst calls (or non-call) in college football that I have ever seen. Top 25

Heisman Hype: I don’t really care at this point in the year. Frankly, I’m not interested in it until at least Halloween. But if you want the current top names:
Top 4: 1. Alabama: Florida played them to the wall and a very dangerous Ole Miss team is on deck. A bad defensive performance next week and Alabama falls. 2. Georgia: Amazing defense continues to pair with a shitty boring offense. 3. Oklahoma: Way to close to future UConn HC candidate Scott Frost’s crappy Cornhuskers. 4. Oregon: No reason for them to go anywhere, they crushed the Stony Brook (who I will always think fondly of for being interested in me years ago) Down:

Heisman Hype: I don’t think anyone really made a dent this week of interest. Sorry, but crushing crappy teams doesn't win the trophy in week 2. Top 4: 1. Alabama: Florida is an interesting matchup next week. 2. Georgia: Amazing defense and pedestrian offense. Sorry, scoring on UAB doesn’t impress me. 3. Oklahoma: They trashed an opponent they should. 4. Oregon: A big quality win and a leap up. That they were shorthanded without their best defensive player made it even better. Down:
Big 12 to Big 14? BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF to JoinBig 12 presidents at a meeting Friday will "rubber stamp" invitations to join the conference to BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF. Big 12 settled on those four schools as a means of replenishing the conference following the losses of Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC. Three of those programs made notable advancements this week as they plan to migrate to the Big 12. On Monday, Houston president Renu Khator received approval from the university's board of regents to pursue membership in the Big 12. Cincinnati and UCF on Wednesday officially applied for Big 12 membership, according to multiple reports. There is no indication that BYU has made a formal application to the conference yet, though there are talks that it could join the Big 12 earlier than other programs, perhaps as soon as 2022 due to its independent status. The additions of BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF should allow the Big 12 to remain a Power Five conference as college football continues to recover from the sudden departures of Texas and Oklahoma. However, by raiding the American of three prominent members, the Big 12 additions may set off an even more drastic set of realignment among the Group of Five leagues. And the Domino effect...The AAC needs to go raiding to make up for losing three teams (Cincinnati, Houston and UCF) and will actually have some decent options to choose from:
And what it is working towards...I think all of this pushes closer and closer to college football being removed from the NCAA and becoming its own thing. The cascading effect of taking the top teams out of conferences has a trickle down effect of bringing more and more teams into the Power 5 realm and giving the Group of 5 more influence as a feeder. This isn't long term sustainable as the musical conference chairs just temporarily solves the problem until the next TV deal is negotiated.
The Texas / Oklahoma switch has already put the expanded playoff on temporary pause, what other changes occur because of it?
Just a quick note: This is being posted before this week's polls have come out, so I have removed all rankings to avoid displaying incorrect information. -Dave Top 25 No. 2 Oklahoma 40, Tulane 35 No. 19 Penn State 16, No. 12 Wisconsin 10 No. 11 Oregon 31, Fresno State 24 No. 1 Alabama 44, No. 14 Miami 13 No. 8 Cincinnati 49, Miami (OH) 14 No. 18 Iowa 34, No. 17 Indiana 6 No. 7 Iowa State 16, Northern Iowa 10 No. 21 Texas 38, No. 23 Louisiana 18 No. 15 USC 30, San Jose State 7 No. 5 Georgia 10, No. 3 Clemson 3 No. 13 Florida 35, FAU 14 No. 6 Texas A&M 41, Kent State 10 No. 16 LSU 27, UCLA 38 Notre Dame plays Florida State on Sunday, September 5th. Random Thoughts- Ohio State's talent shines through. The rest of the Big 10 seems to have some big holes. - I do like Penn State's defense though. Their defense backs came to play and they could cause issues with their pass rush. - Michigan State looked pretty decent too. - The Indiana love fest from last year was disrupted by Iowa. - After Hurricane Ida displaced Tulane, which was supposed to host arguably its biggest-ever game against the Sooners in New Orleans, OU painted the Green Wave's logo on Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium's surface. Which was kind of cool. - Oklahoma probably shouldn't have let Tulane get that close though. - Alabama doing Alabama things. It doesn't matter how many guys go Pro, another 4 or 5 star recruit plugs in and they are off to the races again. They were in midseason form by the middle of the game. - LSU head coach Ed Orgeron talked smack about the UCLA team colors, and then the Bruins took LSU to the woodshed. LSU didn't just lose, they got beat up. - Texas A&M impressed. A&M is likely to face only one ranked opponent all year as I would be shocked if LSU is ranked when they meet. - Washington lost 13-7 to Montana at home. WTF? Thank heavens that the PAC 12 had some times show up or this could have been another year of PAC 12 being an afterthought a single weekend. Bad, really bad. - North Carolina looked like they were really slow and not nearly the powerhouse they were last year. It looks like a huge regression. - The Gus Malzahn Experience is off to a good start at Central Florida after they beat Boise State. - Congrats to Steve Sarkisian on his first Texas win against a better than people realize Louisiana-Lafayette. To be honest though, I'm not really interested until they meet up with Oklahoma. - Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder looked pretty darn good, could the Bearcats have a powerhouse offense to go with a good defense? - The Illinois hype wagon is now dead, it was an enjoyable week. They lost to UTSA 37-30, giving UTSA their first win against the Big 10. - In the who really cares category: Presbyterian quarterback Ren Hefley, a former walk-on at Michigan, threw for an FCS record 10 touchdown passes in an 84-43 win over St. Andrews. Injuries: - Oklahoma star WR Theo Wease to miss first half of the season with lower-body injury - Michigan QB Ronnie Bell carted off with leg injury. - Oregon star defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux was knocked out of Saturday's win over Fresno State with a left ankle injury. Heisman HypeSome of the early suspects didn't perform well, others shined.
Top 4This is my version, not a prediction of where they will land in polling.
1. Alabama: The machine continues to roll. 2. Ohio State: The talent gap between Ohio State and the rest of the Big 10 is pretty substitutional. It also causes a problem when they meet Alabama in the playoffs and they can't out talent the other team. 3. Georgia: You beat the number three and you move up. That simple. That offense isn't going to cut it against Alabama or Texas A&M in the SEC Championship game. 4. Cincinnati: Played a scrub and buried them like they should. Considering that the rest of their schedule is also scrubs, it looks good for them this year. Down: - Oklahoma: You can't let Tulane get that close when you should have blown them out by at least 21 points. - Clemson: A soft schedule the rest of the year makes the playoffs still an option. |
