One of the reasons that sports loving PS3 owners like me or some XBox 360 owners haven't upgraded our gaming consoles to the next generation is because we have EA Sports NCAA Football games for our machines, and we aren't willing to give those games up yet.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State University has lost its fight to trademark the word "The." The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office turned down the university's request to trademark "The" when used as part of the school's name on university merchandise. OSU submitted the trademark application last month. The patent office cited the trademark appears to be used for ``merely decorative manner'' and as an ``ornamental feature'' that doesn't appear to function as a trademark that would differentiate the items from others. The school requested for it to be put on various items including T-shirts, baseball caps and hats. The office says the university will have to prove the trademark would allow consumers to directly associate the goods with their brand. OSU says they are reviewing their options and will respond in six months. Furthewww.cbssports.com/wwe/news/2019-wwe-clash-of-champions-matches-card-date-ppv-rumors-start-time-predictions-location/
Universal Championship -- Seth Rollins (c) vs. Braun Strowman: Although the two are the reigning Raw tag team champions, Strowman has been eyeing the universal title for the past few weeks. The "Monster Among Men" laid down the challenge to Rollins on Raw, and the champ was happy to accept as these two will have a heavy workload come Clash of Champions (more on that below). Dave's prediction: I would love to see the WWE take a chance and put the belt on Braun Strowman...but if they couldn't pull the trigger when he was feuding with Brock Lesnar, they won't do it now. Seth Rollins retains the Universal Championship. WWE Championship -- Kofi Kingston (c) vs. Randy Orton: Things weren't settled between Kingston and Orton at SummerSlam, and it's been made clear as day their feud will continue to be central to the WWE championship picture for some time. Orton hit Kingston with an RKO following a six-man tag on the SmackDown after SummerSlam, and the following week it was Kingston executing his own sneak attack with a Trouble in Paradise. With the two are advertised to wrestle for the title in a triple threat with Dolph Ziggler on the SmackDown debut episode on Fox in October, this feud may not come to an end at Clash of Champions. Dave's prediction: I predicted it for Summerslam, and I am gonna predict it again: Randy Orton becomes the WWE Champion. I still feel that the WWE will give him one more run before Orton calls it a career. Further, putting the belt on a heel like Orton would put the WWE's golden boy, Roman Reigns, in a natural position to become the #1 contender after his feud with Rowan is over...so, Orton wins, keeps belt until Survivor Series in November, to face off against Reigns. Raw Women's Championship -- Becky Lynch (c) vs. Sasha Banks: There are some who believe that this match should main event the show come Sept. 15 ... and those people may be correct. Since Banks' shocking return a few weeks ago where she targeted Lynch, this has been the hottest angle going in the company by far. These two women should put on an absolute show at Clash of Champions, no matter where they're slotted on the card. Dave's prediction: I am 50.000001% confident that with Bayley's help, Sasha Banks will become the new Raw Women's Champion. I predicted in the Charlotte Flair/Bayley matchup that Banks would help Bayley, and I predict here for this matchup that Bayley helps Sasha Banks... SmackDown Women's Championship -- Bayley (c) vs. Charlotte Flair: Flair threw down the gauntlet while appearing on "A Moment of Bliss" on SmackDown Live, saying while Bayley is the champ, it's Flair who is the brand. Bayley responded, accepted Flairs challenge and then proceeded to shove her to the ground. Dave's prediction: If I were booking this, Charlotte Flair would win in a heartbeat. But with the return of Sasha Banks, and Bayley's apparent heel turn, Bayley is going to keep the Smackdown Women's Championship a little longer, probably due to Sasha Banks interfering somehow. Roman Reigns vs. Erick Rowan (No disqualification): There has been a slow burn to get to Bryan vs. Reigns, but for right now they're going to use Rowan as a hurdle "The Big Dog" must clear to get to a match with "The Planet's Champion." Rowan has been revealed the the man who attacked Reigns during the forklift incident, though the endgame of this storyline is certainly Bryan being revealed as the mastermind all along. On the final SmackDown before the pay-per-view, Rowan and Reigns brawled through the crowd and Rowan used camera equipment to lay out Reigns. Following the brawl, the match was made no disqualification. Dave's prediction: Roman Reigns has a match? Then he wins. Intercontinental Championship -- Shinsuke Nakamura (c) vs. The Miz: The newfound alliance of Nakamura and mouthpiece Sami Zayn have turned their attention towards eight-time IC champ The Miz. Many thought it would be Ali -- who has his hands full at the moment with the King of the Ring tournament -- getting this spot against Nakamura, but no one could really complain when a decorated, veteran champion such as The Miz steps in for a bit. Dave's prediction: Shinsuke Nakamura retains Intercontinental title. United States Championship -- AJ Styles (c) vs. Cedric Alexander: With a clean pinfall victory over Styles to conclude a 10-man tag team match on Raw in Madison Square Garden on the go-home show, Alexander earned the opportunity to challenge the champion for the title at Clash of Champions. Dave's prediction: Your time is coming, Cedric....but not yet. AJ Styles retains the US Championship. Raw Tag Team Championship -- Seth Rollins & Braun Strowman (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode: Here's where the heavy workload for Rollins & Strowman comes in leading up to their showdown for the universal title. On a night where every title is required to be defended, they must put these titles on the line before battling for the top prize. Ziggler & Roode -- an interesting choice of challengers, to say the least -- earned the opportunity after winning a tag team turmoil match on Raw. Dave's prediction: Given that Rollins and Strowman have a match against each other later on the card, it's hard to pick against Ziggler and Roode from causing a wedge between them here...Ziggler and Roode become the new Raw Tag Team Champions. SmackDown Tag Team Championship -- The New Day (c) vs. The Revival: Away from the Raw tag team title scene, Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder have set their sights on the blue brand tag team titles while they assist Randy Orton in his rivalry with WWE champion and New Day member Kofi Kingston. The Revival recently issued a challenge on challenge on SmackDown television, and now they'll get their shot. Dave's prediction: The Revival become your new Smackdown Tag Team Champions. Women's Tag Team Championship -- Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross (c) vs. Fire & Desire: WWE made a match for the championships official after Fire & Desire picked up a win over the champs in a non-title match on SmackDown. Dave's prediction: Bliss-Cross retains titles. Cruiserweight Championship -- Drew Gulak (c) vs. Humberto Carrillo vs. Lince Dorado: Carrillo punched his ticket to a shot at Gulak's title by defeating Oney Lorcan in a No. 1 contender's match on the Aug. 27 edition of 205 Live. Dorado defeated Carrillo on the Sept. 3 edition of the show to earn his own spot in the match and turn it into a triple threat. There's history here with Gulak formerly operating as a "mentor" for the high-flying Carrillo before a falling out and eventual match that saw the youngster score the win. Two months later, Gulak won the title at Stomping Grounds. Dave's prediction: Drew Gulak retains title. www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/27582269/calif-bill-pay-ncaa-athletes-takes-another-step
A bill in California that would make it possible for college athletes to accept endorsement money moved one step closer to becoming law Monday evening. The California State Assembly voted 72-0 in favor of the proposed law known as the Fair Pay to Play Act. The Fair Pay to Play Act would make it illegal for colleges and universities in California to take away an athlete's scholarship or eligibility as a punishment for that athlete profiting from his or her name, image or likeness. If passed, the new law would go into effect in January 2023. The bill was introduced by state Senator Nancy Skinner in February, and it has received an overwhelming majority of support on its way through the legislative process. The state senate voted 31-5 to pass the bill in May. Because it has been amended since then, the bill now moves back to the senate for approval. If the senate votes in favor again, it will land on the desk of Gov. Gavin Newsom, who can sign it into law. California's senate is expected to vote on the amended bill in the near future, which would put it on pace to land on Newsom's desk some time before the end of September. "To me, this is fundamental fairness," Skinner told ESPN in August. "California law basically gives each of us the right that no one can use my name, market my name or make money off of my name, or my photo, without my permission, or without sharing that revenue with me. The only people in the entire state of California for whom that is the case are student-athletes." California schools and the NCAA have opposed the bill because it would make it impossible for those schools to follow the NCAA's amateurism rules. NCAA president Mark Emmert wrote a letter to legislators in May that said, in part, the proposed law might make it impossible for the NCAA to include California schools in national championship games if those schools were operating under a different set of rules. Skinner and other lawmakers in California interpreted Emmert's letter as a threat. Emmert asked the state politicians to give the NCAA more time to consider making changes to the way it treats the name, image and likeness rights of student-athletes. The organization formed a working group to study potential modifications to its current rules. That group is scheduled to report its findings to the NCAA's board of governors at some time in October. Skinner and others have argued that the NCAA has had plenty of time to reconsider its policies during the past decade amid a series of civil lawsuits dealing with similar issues. Skinner also noted that the NCAA hasn't acted since a commission headlined by Condoleezza Rice suggested last year that college athletes should be able to receive endorsement money. "That was a commission that they themselves initiated," Skinner said. "I'd say, yeah, they probably need legislative pressure." If the bill is signed into law by Newsom, the NCAA and other states will have three years to decide how to react. Proponents of the bill hope that the recruiting advantage that California schools would have if athletes in the state are allowed to make money will prompt other states to adopt similar legislation. Several other states already have considered similar laws. Mark Walker, a Congressman from North Carolina, also has proposed a federal law that would have the same effect. Dave's two cents: If I recall, we had a thread in the original NCAA Chatters on Disqus when this bill was simply going through committees in the California legislature. Now all it has to do is be re-approved by the California Senate and signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom, and in 2023, college sports in the state of California will cease to exist. The thing is, every major school in California is against this bill, this isn't USC, Stanford, UCLA and Cal trying to subvert the laws of the NCAA...they are standing WITH the NCAA on this. This is the state of California, acting on it's own, against the wishes of it's educational institutions. Right now, the NCAA is only threatening to ban California schools from competing for championships...but technically, the NCAA could declare every single California college athlete that accepts any endorsement deal is ineligible as well. The schools themselves understand this. If California insists on passing this bill, come 2023, they will regret it. Athletes won't come to California schools because they can't win any titles, and nobody is going to offer endorsements to players who are then declared ineligible to play, because they accepted that endorsement offer... There would be no reason for an athlete to ever go to a California state university, all because of the California Legislature's stupidity. I am sympathetic to the idea of allowing student-athletes to get endorsement deals, to get paid for the use of their likenesses...but this isn't the way to do it. You have to change the NCAA from the inside, not try to attack it from the outside. Convince the NCAA of the merits, don't try to take them on. - Even with the double OT loss to Michigan, Army deserves to be ranked in the top 25. The Black Knights are a damn good football team, and this is the 2nd top 10 team they have taken to overtime in the last two years. Those guys played their hearts out.
- If Michigan QB Shea Patterson doesn't learn how to protect the football better, he is going to be riding the bench in favor of Dylan McCaffrey pretty damn soon. Despite the mad respect for the Army Black Knights, Michigan fully deserves the drop in poll position they got, despite the win. They haven't looked like a team anywhere near ready to challenge for the B1G, let alone be a CFP caliber team through two games...while Auburn and Florida have looked good. - Through two games, the Maryland Terrapins have scored 132 points. WHAT? HOW DA FUQ DOES THAT HAPPEN? - With their victory over Texas A&M, the board is set for Clemson to run the table. - LSU won a game they had to win. - It's still fun for me to watch Nebraska lose. - Utah is now #11. Enjoy it Utes...for this week, anyway. You got the Trojans next, and after what they did to then-#23 Stanford, I wouldn't be shocked at all to see them continue their rise in the rankings by knocking you off. - 5 of the top 10 are from the SEC for now. SEC play will change that, but for as cocky as B1G fans like me can get, the SEC, from top to bottom, is better than the B1G is. And can we be honest here? The ACC is a one team conference. The only competition in the ACC is in the Coastal division, to see which team gets wrecked by Clemson in the ACC title game. My Power Five Conference ranking: 1. SEC 2. BIG 3. PAC-12 4. Big XII 5. ACC - Dave
